<itunes:summary>Since our recent relocation, Kira and I have been filling our space with things. We've opened boxes, that had been sealed for years, to revile in our pasts and have scoured the internets for giveaways that may help us fill the empty space. We've visited junk stores and high-end retailers. I've spent most of the time being a grump about overpriced overseas plastic products and Kira has made sure to allow me my requisite geocaching interludes as we have crisscrossed the city.

Among all the options for buying 'new' things, we've come to find that there is one form of used purchasing that seems to sit well with us. The estate sale. It's a no-pressure, make me an offer, cultural time machine of an experience. The products are immaculate, meaningful, and interesting. We've acquired bits and pieces of our home that were once a beloved part of someone else's home, not just the discarded junk from the dorm. Our can opener, a runner, a tin cup that is the kid-brother to my beloved camping cup (photo), American Flag pins, and the $5 Braun MP80.

Now normally I wouldn't be too eager to pick up just any MP80. From my days of coming home for lunch during the summer, after hours of waterpolo practice, and flicking on the tube to get my 45 minutes of rest in, I've been a devoted follower of the Jack Lalane. His enthusiasm, energy, and the practicality of the machine really sold me. I've never owned one, nor even used one, but the daily info-mercial told me it was a good decision and I've stuck to that advice. That is until my good-buddy ChadlyD gave me some advice. ChadlyD Everybody! Mr. ChadlyD didn't go with the Jack Lalane. I can't tell you how many times I've asked him about his decision making skills, but he maintains that the Jack Lalane simply doesn't hold a candle and I needed to get out there and explore the  world for what it is, and not what television wants me to think it is. Humbled, I had to agree.

So here I am, in a home that is on the edge of the Pacific ocean, filled with the debris of change and the ensuing sale and I'm looking for a can opener and maybe a bread knife, because we don't have those yet, and what do I find? A supercharged MP80, clean and ready to go. A small green sticker was affixed to the device that read, 'juicer $5.'Â Twenty minutes later I had two American Flag pins and a new power tool and I think the video tells the rest.

<itunes:summary>In 2009 my good friend, 蛋糕, was kind enough to collaborate on an exciting and difficult a cappella project. With the meager tools we had at the time and our genetically limited vocal range, we threw all we had at this temperamental art project.  Like many of our ideas at the time, the song began to develop around our foreign disposition within the big red goose. By the time we had hammered out a general tune and enough lyrics to sustain our creative thirst we’d stepped right into the competitive language learning market and, by my scale, came out better than expected. So go ahead and plug this one-take a cappella-draft in between your NoRain and Free Fallin’ road trip exercises and you may find yourself learning a little language and culture.
Enjoy!
Original song and lyrics are filed under it’s original published date:Â 2009-07-06Â (http://www.shuaibaj.com/2009/07/06/ni-ma/)

<itunes:summary>June 1st I debuted my banjo talents in front of the Stanford Graduate School of Business (estimates of 500+ people) in a standing room only environment. My frist run at a public performance. I have to say I can do a lot of things in public without batting an eye, but this Really pushed my limit.. phew.
To begin, turn it back one week to May 25th when I received an email. It asked for a banjo player to do a song. Not much else. So I accepted and learned what terms I’d accepted. I would be playing a recent pop song featuring a banjo playing at about a million miles an hour with three other people on a stage for .. some people. Oh, and by the way, “we play in one week.”  More so, we didn’t have the sheet music, so figure that out too.
Now I’m not too clever when it comes to writing music, but after some YouTube lessons and I exercising my ears about 40-dozen times, I did my best to work-up a short score for my 5-string duties. After three days, I had the TAB down and could begin practice. In celebration of my achievements, I went on vacation for the memorial day weekend.
Returning Tuesday, with one day left, I set my fingerst to work, in the dark practice of a solo musician playing to an invisible band, as they exercised sixty miles away. Those living within earshot became quite tired of this new annoyance in their life.
Wednesday morning, with a little more than 12-hours to go, I drove to Palo Alto and worked in about forty-five minutes of band time before they had to return to their coursework and I to my leisure. It was the only rehearsal we would have before playing nearly ten and a half hours later at 9:20 PM. With the others off to class I reflected on my whirlwind of a week and the serene calm I must understand in order to perform. I came out of my trance and walked onto the stage, presenting the best we could do for a sloppy drunk crowd. Aside from a few kinks and the stiffness of a frist performance, the show turned out just ‘fine.’ (fortunately, my mic was turned down and mistakes went without much notice – I assume.)
Now I’ve got the performance bug.. hahaha.. Enjoy the show.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Friday was suppose to be good.. comfortable.. it was sunny, clear, I could see the crisp skyline of Oakland and The City. The Golden Gate Bridge posed perfectly as the framing to the Pacific. I was computing, seriously computing. Sitting on the deck, legs up, shades on, computing furiously getting THIS site back into working order and Nelly Furtado was playing on my stereo - that's when you know things are going well, "Hey Man" is going full speed and nothing can stop you. It was Friday and I didn't even know. Until it all stopped.

I suppose I didn't expect it to occur as it did, which is why I felt so supprised. Like a pre-teen, who didn't know any better, took the car for a spin and was waving as they rolled by the house. Here I was, three stories away and my ladies just come rolling by. "Heeey-yaaa Jooohnnnn." ... "Heeeey-yaa. Check us ouuuuttt." And then around the block again. Except, "NO."

Basically, my ladies swarmed about a week after a very scientific and methodical split took place, so no, they were not allowed their driving privlidges. But they took them anyway.. .. youth.

So after a few phone calls to requisite beekeeping partners, I posted to the Yahoo group, recieved a generous amount of insight and suggestion and help and did as any reasonable ACBA member would do and 'took care of it." But rather than articulate that in more broken sentences with "quotations" and vernacular one-offs - I figure I'd try my hand at the 5-minute swarm capture film. - so, enjoy.

Thanks to those who called me and walked me through the process on my frist swarm catch, Victoria, Kevin, Bob, and Much thanks to Patrick Connally and his partner for driving up and helping us out with this negotiaton, really, couldn't have done it without you two.

A Letter To Her Majesty, The Queen:
I am amis,
for I am not as
things seem from high aloft
to collectors
of the nectars
and the stamen pollen soft
Not big and bold,
As the Marigold
Nor Delicate, as a Rose
Sloppily,
not even a poppy.
You will have no yellow nose.
I have not
fear, and drink no beer
so not to offend with breath
Yet Anger
bests and deliver thefts
of body parts and single death
garden troves
and the wooded groves
soft fertile bedded soil
do play home
to the many who roam
yet not I, with all my toil
reason tells,
from many hells,
to pacify our argument
for we can
plainly see we must
leave behind this very torment
let this cease
and look to a peace
I no longer wish to be stung
I only ask
when I wear my mask
for some honey on my tongue

<itunes:summary>Kira and I flew out to Colorado to celebrate Holly’s birthday. We didn’t have much time before leaving to put together a present for her, so Kira picked up a tent from REI and I, well, royally slacked.  Just before leaving the house I felt perhaps I’d get a break while we were there and I could put down a couple of tracks and some lyrics to celebrate her 20th.  Sadly I learned, after talking with Kira, it seemed we wouldn’t get much of a break from any of the weekend excitement once we landed and recording was going to be futile.
However, we’re not considered the quitting type, usually. So, within the confines of an Boeing 737 300 series aircraft, in seat 13 D & E, and somewhere over Nevada at 30,000 feet, I set up shop. I expected this was the most privacy I would get throughout the next four days.
Ultimately, the song could use some work, BUT I think this could turn into something quite remarkable. I saw Apogee is making a XLR to iPad interface and I could see mile high recording incorporating the sounds of flight, passenger AC, and the unpredictability of *DING* resonating through the microphone, accompanied by the inability to truly master tracks and massive feedback potential. I like to think of it as the recording parkour.  It’s going to be HUGE! mark my words.
Enjoy -</itunes:summary>

As the film says, "don't worry, we're awesome."

On Saturday we woke up in Stockton and drove East in search of snow. We found it some 40 miles later when we came through the Orvis Cattle Co. Ranch Property (http://www.orvisranch.com/history.shtml). Yet, we pushed through because it just wasn't cold enough. Up through the foothills we sped. Then we got pulled over, given a warning, and the remainder of the day was spent at reasonable speeds until we arrived in the sleepy town of Arnold.

In Arnold we stopped at the Humane Shelter Thrift Store, stocked up on things we didn't need, like a rock tumbler - sweet! and then over to the local ACE where we acquired a shovel and blue disc. Then up into the neighborhoods looking for the perfect runway (with parking). After dotting about the whole town we finally pulled into a development with large threatening signs for visitors to stay away. It was here that we made our camp for the afternoon.

<itunes:summary>‘Escape Hatch,’ previously labeled ‘In My Office,’ is a song inspired by a short video orienting the viewer around ‘the office (http://blog.johnmizell.com/2011/02/14/chads-office-video).’
After receiving the video I spent the morning composing impromptu songs in order to musically describe the setting. Each song was composed quickly and in rapid succession. The first by 10 AM the last by 1 PM.  Version 3.0 is considered, by me, to be the best of the four, but you be the judge. The 4-song album features:

* Ballad to An Escape Hatch
* Tale of An Escape Hatch

(http://blog.johnmizell.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/photo.jpeg)It’s a Tapestry

–Lyrics–
I got a pot on my wall
and I sport dual screens
a woven tapistry
and secretary
in my office
I pay your bills
do your taxes
keep you books
send blank faxes
protection form auditors
from the irs
from your ex’s ex
I’ll do my best
but just incase
if it hits the fan
I’m ready to run
fast as I can
I’ll have calls
routed on through
you’ll get my message
like you normally do
but
I’ll have already gone
it’ll be too late
summoned my people
running my fate
it’s a woven scene
from the mexico
a gathering
to which I will go
In my secret vessel
to which I keep
I withdraw my key
from the deep
in a pot on the wall
in a frame
you think it’s a picture
on a nail it hangs
but your wrong
it’s a magic pot
holding the fate
it’s all I’ve got
and my laser printer
is ready to run
it grows legs
and is set for stun
the cords on my wall
come to life
like an octopus
to be my wife
Tom says I’m crazy
Kristen says I’m nuts
Linda never laughs
Denise calls me putz
but in the end,
i’ll get em all
cause they don’t know
that I’ve got the ball
it’s a secret of mine
and no body knows
till it’s too late
and away I goes
into my escape hatch
painted white, camouflage
except at night, still looks white
looks like a door
but it’s not.
it’s an escape hatch
it’s my escape hatch
zing!

As the video shows, a more regular cleaning is important to keep the bees happy.

*Special Notes on the film: The hive should be carried outside in order to limit bees escaping into the building. Future taping within the building 'needs to be 'okayed' by the city.'

However, since the life-span of the honey bee is between 6-weeks and 6-months this is not always a sure shot, but at least getting them back into the hive gives them a chance if it was simply luck or bad weather that landed them short. -Â Enjoy

<itunes:summary>A special note on Chinese Democracy & Fairness.

We produced a stellar video: http://blog.johnmizell.com/2009/03/31/recruitment (http://blog.johnmizell.com/2009/03/31/recruitment)

For a competition that they created: http://blog.johnmizell.com/2009/05/29/vote-for-hohhot (http://blog.johnmizell.com/2009/05/29/vote-for-hohhot)

In order to develop free marketing for their school (which they still use): http://www.astonrecruiting.com/hohhot-aston.html (http://www.astonrecruiting.com/hohhot-aston.html)

The competition developed:

*PICTURES TO COME SOON*

And then we were disqualified: http://blog.johnmizell.com/2009/07/05/taking-my-leave (http://blog.johnmizell.com/2009/07/05/taking-my-leave)

... I'm not bitter.

I'm still disappointed in Aston English Schools (http://www.astonrecruiting.com/).
